“Medici: Masters of Florence” is a brand new Netflix original that takes place in Renaissance Italy. It focuses on the story of the wealthy banking family, the Medici. The first episode begins following the mysterious death of the head of the family, Giovanni. The ensuing conflict between the Medici and their rivals, the Albizzi, is quite entertaining. Add that with a massive struggle for power and the mystery surrounding Giovanni’s death, it provides a never ending cycle of entertainment, mystery, conflict, and shock.
To open, the characters are truly stupendous and historically appealing. They are both incredibly bona fide and acted out stupendously. Overall, the actors do a good job of portraying the people of whom they play in the show. There is not a single moment where the audience will feel that the characters are inauthentic, and because of this, the audience remains intrigued due to the impeccable portrayals in this show. Additionally, the attention to detail of the setting is remarkable: the intricate background effectively reasserts the Renaissance era of which the story takes place. The scenes and sets well represent the classical artistic styles or artistry and Florencian architecture. Moreover, the story and plot of this show are truly superb. “Medici: Masters of Florence” is incredibly captivating, and never once is there a moment of disinterest. Its story brings a constant element of surprise that results in the viewer never being sure of how any conflict will end. Also, the way in which the show provides segue from one scene to the next is notable as well. The fluency of the show is executed in such a way that the viewer feels as if they, too, are a part of the show and story. Thus, all-in-all making it an easy, interesting, and truly enjoyable watch because of these many aspects that fully captivates our attention.
“Medici: Masters of Florence” is truly fantastic, a 10/10. This would be a terrific watch for any and all history buffs, but it would also appeal to any fans of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” due to its historic nature; it would also be appealing to anyone looking for a well-shot, well-acted out TV show that is dramatic and historical. Caution though, as it is on Netflix, there is no censoring so there is foul language and some scenes of nudity and sexual interaction. It first aired on Netflix in early December 2016, and it is unknown when the new season will air, as the first season just came on. Reports say that the show will return for at least one more season, hopefully more because it is rare to find a television program that is so engaging while it also maintains historical affluency.
